Nothing in life worth having was every achieved without a certain degree of discomfort, suffering, or sacrifice.
The trick to being OK with this inevitability is to accept that:
– It’s going to happen whether you like it or not.
– The juice is worth the squeeze.
You need to make sure that you walk into whatever task you are looking to achieve with a certain level of understanding of the gravity this level of commitment with have in the context of your life.
The most common example of this I see within my field specifically, is with fat-loss.
A client walks in and tells me that they want to lose 40lbs. Not only that, but they want to lose it in as quick of a time frame as possible.
This puts me in a situation where I need to start managing the expectations of this client. Now, I want them to achieve their goal – I really do.
But we need to take into consideration the fact that this is a huge goal. Especially in the context of the time frame. And while fat-loss is a simple process of consistently expending more calories than you are eating. Applying this principle to your life isn’t easy.
There are a host of personal and psychological drivers behind the whole nutritional process. So we need to establish if whether the goal fits the time frame.
If you have the kind of client that, if you looked them dead in the eye, and said you needed them to chew nails and spit bullets to achieve their goal. They would look right back at you and say, “what size nail, and what caliber bullet?”, then good for you. This time frame may be applicable to the goal of losing 40lbs.
However, that kind of client is one in a million. For the most part we’re all just people trying to do the best we can with what we have.
We all have bad nutritional habits. And, while we may have all the tools we need in order to achieve substantial bodily transformations. We never frame the process in the context of our life as it is right now. Rather than the fictitious lifestyle that we create in our heads where the world, and everything in it, is geared up for our success.
So, rather than chucking them in to a situation where they are bound to face disappointment. We create smaller goals, daily tasks, bare ass minimum achievements that, over the course of days, weeks, and months, will instill better nutritional habits, increase activity level, and a greater sense of health and well being.
We’ve met the client where they are, not where they would like to be.
